James D. Hornfischer’s “The Fleet at Flood Tide: America at Total War in the Pacific, 1944-1945”. This book is a history of U.S. Navy operations in the Marianas campaign. In a lot of ways it is a sequel to “Neptune’s Inferno” and illustrates how the U.S. Navy had grown and learned from experience around Guadalcanal.
Tameichi Hara’s “Japanese Destroyer Captain: Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Midway - The Great Naval Battles as Seen Through Japanese Eyes”. Hara served in the Imperial Japanese Navy throughout World War Two. Much of his time was spent commanding destroyers around Guadalcanal. His memoirs are an interesting look at events from Japan’s perspective.
